This paper reviews the main developments in the Chinese space programme during the years 1998, 1999 and 2000. China completed its part of the Iridium series, launched two meteorological satellites, orbited two Earth resources satellites and completed a new navigation satellite system. Three communications satellites were launched, but further commercial development was impeded by American sanctions. The main area of new activity was the orbiting of a prototype manned spaceship, the Shenzhou and the building of substantial ground infrastructure to accompany forthcoming manned flight.
